Gretel grew up surrounded by the sea and the forest. Her family spent part of her childhood on a sailboat and landwards resided on the rocky Maine midcoast. She thought out a traditionally male dominated profession in pursuit of pioneering change. This quest has led her to a job working on a tanker on which she is the only woman.

For months at a time Gretel lives at sea and works long days while there. During her off months she seeks being in the woods, movement, and spending time with the people she loves. Gretel was raised on the mantra “sweat everyday” and is prone to dancing. Family is very important to Gretel; during our conversation she lit up talking about her younger siblings and the interests they have.

Gretel dreams of and is working towards a simpler life. What exactly isn’t set in stone but she has ideas. Picking oysters is one of them.
