hendrick & salih
One of the reasons I love living in Basel is having access to the Rhine and all its public waterfront. The river makes a slow bend through the city, offering sanctuary, solitude, and space to commune.
In 1986, a chemical warehouse caught fire in Basel and tons of toxic waste seeped into the river wrecking environmental havoc as far as 400km away. Eel and fish populations were utterly decimated. Since then the city has invested heavily in keeping the river safe, clean, and accessible. Human impact, however, remains a primary topic of concern.
Today I met Hendrick and Salih around seven in the morning. They systematically moved up one of the most popular sections of the Rhine, picking up trash from the day before.
