reception
I got a really bad haircut today. A year ago I wouldn’t have considered it bad but I’ve had some what I think are really great haircuts since then and as a result I’ve become choosy.
It started when in January of this year I started going to a new barber with a nearly perfect 4.9 (55 reviews) average rating on Google. From when I first called to make an appointment he couldn’t fit me in until 3 weeks later. Usually I don’t have that kind of patience but I had just grown my hair out to fit in a man-bun for over a year and a half and I figured if there was ever an occasion to get it right it would be the time I chop the mane. So I waited for three weeks.
On the day of the appointment I was ready. I had had enough with the long hair and craved simplicity. Little did I know I was about to be awakened to the delights of being pampered a la masculine. Wet shave, check. Dope fade, check. Small talk using deep voice and a mutual show of respect, CHECK. The guy even took a lighter to burn off the baby hairs around the outsides of my ears without me asking. He just did it. And although I was kind of taken aback I learned to see it as detail-oriented, innovative, and maybe even vogue. With each visit I got more and more accustomed to the service and so my picture of quality was redrawn.
This coming Monday I start vacation and unfortunately I didn’t book an appointment at the regular spot with Shaabo soon enough. I decided I would just try a different barbershop. The guy had a cold, was just back from a week long rave in Croatia, and wasn’t what I had gotten used to. Out of respect and the possibility that I didn’t communicate what I wanted effectively, I will omit the details but the end result was that I felt like I overpaid for a shitty haircut.
After the barber, I went to a dentist appointment. “Björn for 1pm.” The receptionist looked at me after glancing at her computer to confirm the slot and said “your picture here looks way different.” OK, it’s not just me this haircut sucks.
